Like all other Jews, Jesus was under obligation to keep the whole law. One of the commandments of the Law was; You must not cut your side locks short around, and you must not destroy the extremity of your beard. That means Jesus had long hair.
Paul implied that men are likely to be less spiritually sensitive or alert because their hair is worn long.
Valleus Paterculus, a Roman Historian, met and interviewed Jesus and made a report to Pilate, who in return made a report to Caesar. Paterculus states, One day in passing by the place of Siloe, where there was a great concourse of people, I observed in the midst of the group a young man who was leaning against a tree, calmly addressing the multitude. I was told it was Jesus "His golden coloured hair and beard" gave his appearance a celestial aspect.
Jesus probably had black, tight curly, perhaps even kinky hair. The historians and archaeologists of today, excluding the ones in the past, argue he would look like a typical Israeli in which he would look neither black or white, but a dark brown mixture of the two.
Hair was very important to Jesus. He reminds us in Matthew 10:30 and in Luke 12:7 that the very hairs of your heard are all numbered, signifying the importance to Him of every aspect of our life and appearance. Jesus definitely had long hair.
The apostle John describes His present appearance as he saw Him in a vision in these words; His head and His hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire.
Hair length varied even among the Israelites although, still again, women always tended to have long hair, or at least longer than the men. It appears that men had longer hair during the time of the Old Testament than during the New Testament.
As with clothing, the general Biblical principle regarding hair was that there was to be a clear difference between men and women, regardless of whatever length was considered socially acceptable at any given time.
First century society frowned on long hair as shameful. Busts, statues, and other art of that time and region show men with short hair in the Roman style.
Jesus Christ had long hair. Since Jesus was on the road with no place to lay His head and He was busy so when did He have time to get a haircut. And when did Jesus have time to get a shave.
Jesus had probably had close cropped hair with long ringlets hanging down on either side of His head in front of His ears. That is how most Jewish males wore their hair.
Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus. Her heart is filled with love for Jesus. She had a flask of expensive perfumed oil. She opened and poured the perfume on to Jesus' head, then she pours the ointment on His feet. And then she gets down on her knees.
She takes "His Long Silken Black Hair" and pulls it over her shoulder. She mingles the ointment with her tears. And she wipes the feet of Jesus, and praises Him.
I Corinthians 11:14 says, Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him.
The Greek word for shame in this verse is translated elsewhere in the New Testament as dishonour, vile, disgrace.
In Romans 1:26 the same word is translated vile, For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature. You will notice that these vile affections have to do with homosexuality.
It was a common characteristic of Jewish men to wear their hair in a close cropped fashion. Eusebius copied the text of the Jewish historian Josephus in Contra Apion 1.22, para.173-4. In this section, Josephus was quoting an early Gentile author who gave some unique grooming styles of Jewish men. Josephus shows that the Jews were known, as Eusebius renders it, for their close cropped hair.
Jesus had a beard (facial hair long enough to be grabbed and plucked from His cheeks). For the soldiers to be able to grab Jesus' beard, it must have been at least of moderate length, definitely not a short beard. He had short hair on top of His head.
Jesus had long woolly hair just like lamb's wool and He had a beard and wore a belted robe.
Jesus had nut brown hair that is smoothed down to the ears forming soft curls and flowing onto his shoulders in luxuriant locks, with a parting in the centre of his head after the fashion of the Nazarenes. A smooth clear brow and a reddish face without spots and wrinkles.
Nose and mouth are flawless. He bears a full luxurious beard which is the same colour as his hair and is parted in the middle. He had blue-grey eyes with an unusually varied capacity for expression. He was of medium height fifteen and a half fists tall.
Long hair is a sign of femininity, and when worn by a man, it is seen by God as effeminacy. Man's hair should not be much longer than the natural hair line, this is what is considered short hair in our society. Interestingly, the common style of hair worn by men in the days of Christ is called a 'Caesar's cut' (this is according to several historians).
This was a short box style cut which was cut above the ears and short in the front and back, which is most likely the way Jesus wore His hair.
Jesus had long brown wavy hair and He wore a white robe.
Geography reveals a lot about the hair of men in the Middle East, it's not light and thin, as Jesus is traditionally depicted, but darker, thicker and curlier. Skin tones are darker, too.
It is to be noted that Jesus was a Jew, most of the people in his inner and outer circle of companions and acquaintances were Jews and Paul was a Jew. The condemnation of long hair is therefore a Jewish issue in the Bible.
The decision whether to have long hair or not is an individual choice and an open issue outside of that particular tribe of Israel.
Jesus did not repudiate God's law. Do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets; For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass away until all is accomplished.
Matthew 5:17-18. We can therefore safely conclude, on biblical evidence, that Jesus, too, had long hair and a long beard, just as orthodox Jews have to this very day.
The paintings of Christ are simply artists' conceptions and have no Scriptural authorization. At least one historian of His day described Him as being a tall man with chestnut-coloured hair, parted in the middle, with short hair which turned up at the end. In the book, The Modern Student's Life Of Christ by Irving Vollmer, published by Fleming H. Revell, the author says, Archaeologists object to the conventional pictures of Christ because they are not true to history.
A German painter, L. Fahrenkrog, says, Christ certainly never wore a beard, and His hair was beyond a doubt a closely cut. For this we have historical proof. The oldest representations going back to the first Christian centuries and found chiefly in the catacombs of Rome all pictured Him without a beard.
All the pictures of Christ down to the beginning of the first century and even later are of this kind. Students of the first century and of Roman history are aware of the fact that the time of Christ was characterized by short hair for men.
Hair styles and socially-acceptable length have varied tremendously over the ages, sometimes very short, sometimes very long. Most religious artists portray Jesus with long hair. The man in the Shroud of Turin also has long hair. Paul saw Jesus Christ and Paul was a trustworthy man who wrote a large part of the New Testament, knew exactly what Jesus looked like.
In 1 Corinthians 11:14, Paul wrote, "if a man has long hair" it is a disgrace to him. It's quite unthinkable that Paul would have made such a statement if Jesus Christ had long hair. How could anything about The Jesus be called disgraceful.
If the question of the length of male hair is a problem, then we must blame God for a double-standard, because He commanded certain ones to not cut their hair (in other words let it grow long). A Nazirite was a special person who vowed a vow before God was, by definition, holy.
Part of the vow was to not cut the hair during the time of separation. So, how can the associated long hair, also be a sin. You must use a bit of reasoning when discussing the length of Jesus' hair and God's Word.
Jesus undoubtedly had a beard, and there is nothing at all wrong with a beard or a moustache or long sideburns. But long hair is a different matter. It is interesting that statues dug up from Greek and Roman ruins of that period all depict men with short hair.
The reason why artists depict Jesus with long, shoulder-length hair is that this convention was established during the Middle Ages by artists who simply adopted the style of their own day. But there is no basis for this in the Scriptures.
John said wicked beings were manipulated by the angel who had the key to the Bottomless Pit. Though they have male faces, they are groomed with long hair like women.
Revelation 9:7,8.
John showed that these evil spirits are normally confined to the Abyss (the Bottomless Pit), that is, in the cavernous depths of the earth, but sometimes they are let loose on the surface of the earth.
Revelation 9
These are the evil angels who reside in a captive state within what Paul and the other apostles called the Underworld.
Read Exodus 20:4; Ephesians 4:8-10; Philippians 2:10 and also I Peter 3:19.
These are the angelic creatures referred to by the apostle Paul when he said Christ led captivity captive.
Ephesians 4:8.
In this verse, Paul was quoting Psalm 68:18 and its context which identifies these angelic beings. Verse 21 describes them as being long haired.
Read the original Hebrew, where it correctly renders the King James' phrase the hairy scalp as long haired.
These are the same creatures the apostle John referred to in Revelation 9:7,8.
Since John mentioned that the human faces of these evil spirits are distinguished by having the hair of women (that is,long feminine type hair), this signifies that the faces appeared to the apostle John as being masculine.
We know from archaeological materials, such as Middle Eastern carvings and Egyptian tomb paintings, that Jews wore what we would consider today as long hair and beards. Hair reached down to the shoulders on men. Women wore hair down to the waist.
Caesars and other rulers and emperors had short hair, and of course, the subjects followed the example set by the emperor. The plain simple truth is that during the life of Christ, short hair was the acceptable style. That Jesus wore the conventional style of His day is proved by the fact that Judas had to kiss Him to point Him out to the soldiers.
Had Jesus been somewhat different, as a long-haired freak, Judas could have simply told the soldiers that Jesus was the One with the long hair. This, of course, is not true, as Judas had to place a kiss on Him in order to identify Him.
We don't know what Jesus looked like, because the first depictions of Him weren't done until hundreds of years later. Thus every image we've ever seen of Him is based on nothing but the artists imaginations.
In the time of Jesus most of the Sadducees were priests while the majority of the remainder of the Jews were Pharisees. The Pharisees applied the Scripture that the whole nation of Israel were to be reckoned as priests. Exodus 19:6
They also invented some strict customs even for themselves and the common people that were actually designed only for priests. And what was a principal custom (indeed, it was a command from God) that Characterized the priests because of their roles in being like God to the people and the rest of the world? It was a command from God that all priests had to have Short Hair.
There is a clear Biblical principle that men have short hair and women have long hair. Paul states Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him. But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her
1Cor. 11:14-15
Experts point to a frieze on Rome's Arch of Titus, erected after Jerusalem was captured in AD 70 to celebrate the victory which shows Jewish men with short hair taken into captivity.
Ancient Egyptian men commonly shaved their faces and their heads, not usually allowing it to grow except in times of mourning, after which it was again shaved. Joseph was clean shaven prior to being allowed in before Pharaoh.
Genesis 41:14
During the life of Christ, short hair was the acceptable style. That Jesus wore the conventional style of His day is proved by the fact that Judas had to kiss Him to point Him out to the soldiers. Had Jesus been somewhat different, as a long-haired freak, Judas could have simply told the soldiers that Jesus was the One with the long hair. This, of course is not true as Judas had to place a kiss on Him in order to identify Him.
Jesus who taught in the flesh among the Jews almost 2000 years ago groomed himself by clipping his hair to keep it relatively short. And indeed, even now in his glorified state, the real Jesus and also God the Father continually show themselves as having short hair.
We know such is the case because the apostle Paul taught explicitly that the human male ought to keep his hair short (unlike that of women who were to have their hair long) because Paul said that God the Father and Jesus Christ wore their hair in such a fashion. To Paul it was serious business that this rule of grooming be maintained.
Read all of I Corinthians 11:3-16 where this is commanded by the apostle. He even taught that Gentiles ought to follow the customs of the Jewish Christians who lived in Judea. Gentiles were expected to be followers of the churches ekklesias of God which in Judea are in Christ'
I Thessalonians 2:14
Paul said that if any men wished to be contentious over these matters of grooming and wear their hair long, he reminded them that the apostles have no such custom, neither the churches [ekklesias] of God.
I Corinthians 11:16
Paul directed his command to Gentiles because Jewish men wore short hair.
A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a Minister, if they could discuss his use of the family car. His father took him into his study and said, I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study the Bible a little, get your hair cut and then we'll talk about it.
After about a month, the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss his use of the car. They again went into the father's study where the father said, Son, I've been very proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you've studied the Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut.
The young man waited a moment and then replied, You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that. You know Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair.
The Minister said, Yes, and everywhere they went, they walked.
